RailVidya – National Children’s Integrated Safety Education Programme is a comprehensive educational initiative of the All India Rail Safety Council (AIRSC). It is committed to empowering children and young people with practical safety knowledge, responsible behavioural values, emergency awareness and the confidence to make informed decisions in everyday life.

The programme reflects a clear national vision: safety education should not be limited to occasional instructions delivered after an accident or emergency. It should become a continuous, age-appropriate and meaningful part of a child’s education. By introducing safety awareness systematically from Classes VI to XII, RailVidya seeks to develop alert students, responsible passengers, careful road users, digitally secure learners, prepared family members and safety-conscious citizens.

RailVidya brings together railway and metro safety, road and travel safety, school safety, home and electrical safety, fire prevention, food and health safety, first-aid awareness, disaster preparedness, personal protection, environmental responsibility, internet safety, cybersecurity and responsible citizenship within one integrated learning framework.

Our National Vision

RailVidya envisions an India in which every child has access to practical safety education, every school promotes a culture of prevention, every family reinforces responsible behaviour and every community recognises the protection of life as a shared responsibility.

India’s continuing progress in railway modernisation, metro expansion, digital transformation, sustainable mobility and advanced infrastructure must be supported by an equally strong culture of public awareness. Technology can strengthen safety systems, but responsible human behaviour remains essential. Citizens who understand risks, respect rules, report hazards and protect public property contribute directly to safer institutions and communities.

RailVidya therefore views children not merely as recipients of safety instructions, but as future leaders and responsible citizens who can positively influence their families, schools and neighbourhoods.

Why Integrated Safety Education Matters

A child’s daily life involves many interconnected environments. A simple journey from home to school may include walking along a road, crossing traffic, using a bus, railway or metro service, communicating through a mobile phone and responding to unexpected circumstances. Safety risks rarely occur in isolation.

Children may encounter unsafe roads, crowded public places, railway tracks, station platforms, electrical equipment, online fraud, cyberbullying, contaminated food, extreme weather, fire hazards or unfamiliar situations when travelling or remaining alone. Without suitable preparation, they may be unable to recognise danger or identify the safest response.

RailVidya connects these different areas of safety so that students understand prevention as a complete system of responsible choices—not merely as a collection of rules. The programme helps them learn how to:

A Progressive Learning Journey from Classes VI to XII

The RailVidya curriculum is designed as a structured learning journey that progresses according to students’ age, understanding and level of responsibility.

Students in the foundational stages learn about everyday hazards, safe conduct, trusted adults, emergency contacts and the importance of following instructions. As they advance, they explore risk recognition, public-transport responsibility, cyber protection, first-aid awareness, disaster preparedness and personal safety.

Senior students may participate in supervised projects, awareness campaigns, safety clubs, scenario-based learning and peer-education activities. They can also serve as Young Safety Ambassadors, demonstrating responsible conduct and communicating approved safety messages without assuming enforcement, medical or emergency-response responsibilities.

This progressive approach helps transform safety knowledge into lasting habits and responsible citizenship.

School Safety and a Culture of Prevention

Schools must be places where children can learn, participate and grow in a secure and supportive environment. RailVidya promotes responsible behaviour in classrooms, laboratories, playgrounds, stairways, corridors, school transport and activity areas.

Students learn to recognise and responsibly report hazards such as damaged electrical wiring, blocked emergency exits, unsafe equipment, slippery floors, overcrowding, bullying and inappropriate conduct. They are introduced to evacuation awareness, emergency drills and the importance of following authorised instructions during an incident.

The programme also encourages dignity, inclusion and cooperation. Students should understand how to support younger children and persons with disabilities without placing themselves or others at risk. Through awareness and shared responsibility, schools can create an environment in which prevention becomes part of everyday institutional culture.

Road and Travel Safety

Road and travel safety education prepares children to become careful pedestrians, disciplined passengers and responsible future road users. RailVidya promotes the proper use of footpaths, pedestrian crossings, helmets, seat belts, authorised boarding points and other protective facilities.

Students are taught to avoid mobile-phone distraction, unsafe shortcuts, running across roads, travelling on footboards, leaning out of vehicles and other forms of careless behaviour. They learn that safe mobility protects not only their own lives but also those of pedestrians, passengers, drivers and the wider public.

Responsible travel begins with awareness, patience and respect for traffic rules.

Railway and Metro Safety

Railway and metro safety are central to RailVidya’s educational mission. Millions of children and families interact with railway and urban-transit systems as passengers, visitors and community members. Even one unsafe decision near a track, platform or moving train can have irreversible consequences.

RailVidya teaches students to:

Never walk, sit, play or take photographs on railway tracks.
Never trespass into operational or restricted areas.
Never cross under or around a closed level-crossing gate.
Use foot over bridges, subways and authorised crossings.
Obey railway signals, warning boards and public announcements.
Remain behind the designated platform safety line.
Avoid running, pushing or playing at stations.
Board and alight only when it is safe and permitted.
Allow passengers to exit before entering a train.
Never block or force open closing metro doors.
Use escalators, lifts and stairways responsibly.
Protect railway and metro property.
Cooperate with railway, metro and security personnel.
Report unattended objects or suspicious activity without touching or approaching them.

By practising these principles, children can become disciplined passengers and influential safety messengers within their families.

Home, Fire and Electrical Safety

Safety awareness must continue beyond the classroom. RailVidya helps students recognise common household risks involving fire, cooking gas, electrical wiring, medicines, chemicals, sharp objects, balconies, water storage areas and damaged appliances.

Children are taught not to handle dangerous equipment or attempt repairs without responsible adult supervision. Families are encouraged to maintain emergency contact information, inspect essential safety arrangements and discuss basic evacuation and communication procedures.

These lessons enable students to carry practical knowledge from school into the home while respecting the limits of their age and training.

Food, Health and Hygiene Safety

Health protection is an essential part of safety education. RailVidya promotes hand hygiene, safe drinking water, responsible food handling, carefull reading of labels and awareness of food contamination, expiry dates and allergies.

Students learn that safety is not limited to preventing visible accidents. It also includes protecting physical health, maintaining cleanliness and making informed choices about food and personal well-being. Healthy habits developed during childhood can contribute to stronger families and more resilient communities.

First-Aid Awareness and Emergency Communication

First-aid education can help students respond calmly and responsibly while professional assistance is being arranged. RailVidya introduces children to emergency recognition, personal protection, accurate communication and the importance of contacting trained adults and emergency services promptly.

Students learn how to provide essential information such as the location, nature of the emergency, number of people affected and presence of continuing danger. They are also taught the limits of student intervention.

Children must never attempt hazardous rescues, enter dangerous locations or perform medical procedures for which they have not received recognised practical training. The programme prioritises self-protection, prompt reporting and cooperation with qualified professionals.

Disaster Preparedness and Climate Resilience

Floods, cyclones, heatwaves, lightning, earthquakes, fires and other emergencies can affect children at home, at school and during travel. RailVidya helps students understand official warnings, evacuation instructions, safe shelter practices and family communication plans.

The programme promotes calmness, preparedness and responsible cooperation during emergencies. It also connects safety with environmental responsibility by encouraging water conservation, proper waste management, protection of drainage systems and awareness of climate-related risks.

Preparedness does not mean predicting every emergency. It means developing the knowledge and discipline to respond responsibly when circumstances change.

Internet Safety, Cybersecurity and Digital Citizenship

Children increasingly learn, communicate and build relationships through connected devices. Digital safety must therefore be treated as an essential part of modern child protection.

RailVidya promotes:

Recognition of fraudulent links, messages and offers.

Students are encouraged to seek assistance from trusted adults whenever an online interaction makes them feel threatened, pressured, confused or uncomfortable. Digital citizenship is presented as an extension of personal responsibility, ethical conduct and public safety.

Personal and Emotional Safety

Every child has the right to dignity, personal boundaries and access to protection. RailVidya encourages students to recognise unsafe situations and speak to a trusted adult when they experience bullying, harassment, exploitation, inappropriate contact, intimidation or emotional pressure.

Children learn that an unsafe situation may involve strangers, acquaintances or known individuals. Reporting a genuine concern is not disobedience or weakness; it is a responsible and courageous action.

Schools and families must provide accessible, confidential and child-sensitive reporting channels so that concerns can be heard and addressed appropriately.

Young Safety Ambassadors

The RailVidya Young Safety Ambassador Programme provides a structured and supervised pathway for student leadership. Young Safety Ambassadors learn approved safety principles, demonstrate correct conduct and support school-based educational activities.

They may participate in assemblies, poster campaigns, quizzes, peer-learning sessions, supervised demonstrations and family-awareness initiatives. They lead through knowledge, positive example, compassion and responsible communication—not through authority, enforcement or public criticism.

The programme helps students develop confidence, leadership, civic responsibility and respect for public institutions while ensuring that children are never placed in dangerous or inappropriate roles.

One Child–One Family–One Safety Message

The One Child–One Family–One Safety Message initiative recognises the powerful influence children can have within their homes. A student who learns one accurate safety principle and shares it responsibly may help protect parents, siblings, relatives and neighbours.

Through supervised assignments and family activities, students may discuss topics such as helmet use, seat belts, level-crossing discipline, emergency contacts, safe electrical practices, digital security and responsible travel.

One informed child can influence one family. One safety-conscious family can influence a community. Together, informed communities can help build a safer nation.

The Role of Teachers

Teachers are central to the effective delivery of RailVidya. They transform safety principles into age-appropriate learning and connect classroom knowledge with situations students may encounter in daily life.

Scenario-based discussions, visual resources, supervised drills, practical demonstrations, quizzes, digital lessons and student projects can make safety education engaging and memorable. Teachers must also create an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and reporting concerns without fear or embarrassment.

Suitable orientation, verified resources and continuing professional support can help teachers deliver consistent and accurate safety education.

The Role of Parents and Guardians

Safety lessons taught in school become more effective when they are reinforced at home. Children closely observe adult behaviour. They notice whether adults wear helmets, use seat belts, obey level-crossing gates, avoid mobile-phone distraction and protect private information online.

Parents and guardians are therefore encouraged to model the practices children are expected to follow. When responsible behaviour is demonstrated consistently, safety becomes a credible family value rather than a classroom instruction.

Institutional and Community Cooperation

The effectiveness of RailVidya can be strengthened through appropriate cooperation among schools, families, railway and metro authorities, traffic police, fire and rescue services, health professionals, disaster-management agencies, cybersecurity specialists and child-protection organisations.

Inclusive and Accessible Safety Education

RailVidya is intended to be inclusive, adaptable and accessible to children across different regions, languages, abilities and socio-economic backgrounds.

Children’s safety needs vary according to their surroundings. A student living near a railway level crossing may face different risks from one regularly using an urban metro. Children in coastal, flood-prone, mountainous or extremely hot regions may require additional environmental preparedness. Students with disabilities may need accessible learning resources and suitable emergency-support arrangements.

The curriculum can be adapted to local realities while preserving consistent national principles of prevention, dignity, inclusion and protection.

Learning Through Understanding and Practice

RailVidya encourages assessment based on understanding, judgement and responsible behaviour—not memorisation alone. Students should be able to recognise a hazard, explain the safer option, identify the appropriate reporting channel and demonstrate responsible decision-making.

Scenario-based assessments, supervised exercises, family activities and practical projects can help determine whether knowledge is being converted into genuine safety habits.
