Railway Vision 2047—Connecting Progress, Protecting Lives, Strengthening the Nation is a forward-looking strategic vision initiative of the All India Rail Safety Council (AIRSC). It articulates AIRSC’s aspiration for a safe, intelligent, inclusive, resilient and globally competitive railway and metro ecosystem as India advances towards the centenary of its Independence in 2047.

Indian Railways is more than a transportation network. It is a national lifeline that connects people, communities, markets, industries, ports, educational institutions and centres of opportunity. It supports economic growth, social inclusion, cultural exchange, national integration and strategic mobility. Railway Vision 2047 recognises that the future of India’s development will be closely connected to the safety, reliability, capacity and sustainability of its railway and urban-transport systems.

As India moves towards Viksit Bharat 2047, railway transformation must combine technological progress with an unwavering commitment to human life. Faster trains, modern stations, high-capacity corridors and digital systems will achieve their full national value only when supported by strong safety governance, competent professionals, resilient infrastructure, responsible passengers and a culture of continuous improvement.

Our Vision for 2047

AIRSC envisions an Indian railway and metro ecosystem that is among the world’s safest, smartest, most accessible and most sustainable transportation systems. By 2047, railway safety should be embedded throughout the entire system life cycle—from planning and design to construction, commissioning, operation, maintenance, renewal and modernisation.

The vision is of a connected India where railway development reaches every region responsibly; where passengers travel with confidence and dignity; where employees work in safe and professionally supportive environments; and where infrastructure remains reliable under growing demand, technological change and climate-related challenges.

Railway Vision 2047 seeks to help shape a future in which progress and protection advance together. Every new corridor, station, train and digital system should expand national opportunity while improving safety, accessibility, service quality and environmental responsibility.

Protecting Lives

Metro and rapid-transit systems will increasingly rely on sophisticated technologies such as Communication-Based Train Control, Automatic Train Protection and Automatic Train Operation. Their safe implementation requires systems engineering, independent assurance, configuration management, testing, validation, workforce competence and cyber resilience.

No technology should be considered a substitute for disciplined operations, competent personnel and effective safety governance.

Modern and Resilient Infrastructure

Railway Vision 2047 envisages future-ready tracks, bridges, tunnels, viaducts, stations, depots, drainage systems and electrical installations designed for reliability, maintainability and resilience.
