The Rail Safety Research and Development Forum (RSRDF) is a premier knowledge-driven platform dedicated to advancing railway safety through research, innovation, policy engagement, professional development and multi-stakeholder collaboration. Established as a strategic initiative within the broader institutional framework of the All India Rail Safety Council (AIRSC), the Forum seeks to strengthen the safety, resilience, reliability and sustainability of railway and metro systems in India and across the world.

The Forum serves as an important bridge connecting policy, scientific research, technological innovation and field-level implementation. It transforms evidence, professional experience and emerging knowledge into practical safety strategies, research priorities, institutional recommendations and capacity-building initiatives. Through this integrated approach, RSRDF supports the continuing transition from conventional compliance-oriented safety management towards anticipatory, risk-informed, data-driven and systems-based safety frameworks.

Since its inception in 2009 as a global knowledge-sharing initiative, the Forum has evolved into a respected platform for professional dialogue, collaborative research, strategic policy engagement and international knowledge exchange. Its work is guided by the conviction that railway safety must be treated not merely as a regulatory obligation, but as a fundamental national responsibility and an essential foundation for sustainable mobility, economic development and public confidence.

High-speed rail, modern metro networks, Dedicated Freight Corridors, intelligent signalling, automatic train-protection systems, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, predictive maintenance, digital twins, advanced communication technologies and data-driven asset management are rapidly changing the railway landscape.

At the same time, railway organisations must respond to increasingly complex risks arising from network congestion, ageing infrastructure, climate change, extreme weather, cybersecurity threats, human-performance limitations, high-density operations and growing passenger expectations.
