Indian Railways has approved an investment of approximately ?170 crore for deploying Kavach 4.0 across the remaining 712 route kilometres of the Moradabad Division under Northern Railway. Kavach is India’s indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection system, designed to assist loco pilots and provide an additional technological safeguard during train operations. The system monitors authorised train movement, supervises speed and can initiate automatic braking under prescribed conditions when a loco pilot does not respond appropriately to a danger signal, an overspeed warning or another identified safety-critical situation.
The proposed deployment will require the coordinated installation of onboard equipment, trackside devices, communication systems, signalling interfaces and supporting infrastructure. Detailed engineering surveys, equipment integration, technical validation, safety certification and comprehensive operational testing will be essential before the system is commissioned across the approved routes.
Kavach 4.0 should be regarded as an additional layer of protection within the wider railway-safety system. Its effectiveness depends upon reliable signalling, properly maintained tracks and rolling stock, accurate operational data, trained personnel and disciplined compliance with established procedures. The technology supports loco pilots and railway staff but does not replace human vigilance, preventive maintenance or operational responsibility.
The Moradabad Division is operationally important because it handles substantial passenger and freight movement across several significant railway corridors. Strengthening train-protection coverage across the division can improve operational confidence, reduce exposure to human error and support safer management of an increasingly busy railway network.

Electronic Interlocking Approved at 21 Stations in Samastipur Division
Indian Railways has approved a major signalling-modernisation project involving the provision of Electronic Interlocking at 21 stations in the Samastipur Division of East Central Railway. The project, reportedly sanctioned at an estimated cost of approximately ?233 crore, is intended to replace older panel-based arrangements with modern computer-controlled interlocking technology. Electronic Interlocking is a safety-critical signalling system that electronically coordinates signals, points and authorised train routes. Before a signal permits a train to proceed, the system verifies that the required route has been correctly established, the points are properly positioned and conflicting movements are prevented. This controlled process helps reduce operational risk and supports the safe, orderly movement of trains through stations and junctions.
The proposed upgrade is expected to improve the reliability, precision and maintainability of signalling operations at the selected stations. Modern electronic systems can provide better fault detection, event recording and diagnostic information, allowing trained technical personnel to identify irregularities and undertake corrective maintenance more systematically. The upgrade can also reduce dependence on ageing equipment and support more efficient traffic management.
Importantly, modern Electronic Interlocking provides a stronger technical foundation for the progressive deployment of advanced systems such as Kavach. Reliable signalling data and compatible electronic interfaces are essential for integrating automatic train-protection technology. The Samastipur project therefore contributes not only to the immediate improvement of station signalling but also to the division’s long-term readiness for a more digitally connected railway-safety environment.
Successful implementation will require careful route design, accurate signalling plans, factory and site-acceptance testing, staff training, cybersecurity controls and systematic safety validation. The transition from an existing system to new electronic arrangements must be carefully managed so that regular railway services continue safely during installation and commissioning.
Technology alone cannot guarantee complete safety. Electronic Interlocking must be supported by regular inspections, preventive maintenance, competent signalling personnel, effective supervision and strict observance of operational rules. Failures, abnormalities and near-miss events must be promptly reported and objectively examined so that corrective action can be completed without delay.
